More Gun Storage Options

Many facilities provide safe storage for your firearms. When looking for a place to store your guns away from home, consider gun shops, shooting ranges, police departments, qualified storage facilities, and pawnshops.

Another option is having a family member or a friend store your handguns. If you’re going to have a relative hold your gun for you, the only requirement is that they are legally allowed to have a handgun in their possession. However, if you’re going to have a friend store your firearm for more than 72 hours, they need to undergo a background check.

Questions to Ask Gun Storage Facilities

Before storing your handgun, you should make sure the storage facility you picked is the right fit. Here are some questions to inquire about before purchasing a rental space:

If the gun storage facility you selected can’t answer these questions or seems shady, it’s better to move on to another business. Remember you are responsible for storing your firearm securely. Be selective when finding the right place to store your handgun.

Colorado Gun Storage FAQs

As part of our priority of being an educational gun training center, we also want to answer any and all questions you have. Here are the most common questions about Colorado gun storage.

There are many situations where you may need to find a safe place to store your firearm that doesn’t include your home. For example, perhaps you’re traveling and want to know that your handguns are secure while you’re away, or maybe there’s a family member in the house experiencing mental health concerns.

One of the pillars of firearm safety is knowing how to store your handgun safely. Safe gun storage is having your handgun unloaded and locked away and storing your ammunition separately.

As a college student in Colorado, check in with your campus safety department because many of them offer options to securely store your handguns. Possession of a handgun is not allowed in a dormitory.

If you plan on leaving your home for an extended period of time, there’s a higher risk of your firearms being stolen. If you realize your firearms are stolen or missing and you do not report it within the statutory 5 days of your knowledge, you could face criminal charges. So, it’s best to store your handguns at a secure firearms storage facility if you’re going to be gone for some time.

You can keep your firearms in a hotel room but only when you’re present. Because you do not have primary possession of your hotel room, you cannot leave your firearms in it unattended. It is always recommended to check with hotel management before your stay to make sure this follows their own policies and guidelines.

You have to check with the storage facility, but most likely, you can’t store your handgun in a self-storage unit. Sometimes, storage units go to auction, and anyone can bid on a storage unit, including those who are legally prohibited from owning a handgun. Therefore, there can’t be anything inside the storage unit that an individual may not be allowed to legally possess.
