Time to renew your CCW permit? Get registered here!
Jefferson County covers a lot of ground, from busy Lakewood and Arvada neighborhoods to the winding roads above Evergreen and Conifer. Wherever you live in Jeffco, getting a concealed handgun permit starts the same way: a qualifying class with a verified instructor, then an online application to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Golden.
Colorado Handgun Safety helps Jeffco residents get the training step done right. You’ll get in-person instruction, the required written exam and live-fire exercise, and a signed certificate ready for your application.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office checks your training documentation closely. If your certificate doesn’t meet its standards, your application can stall before it starts. For applicants qualifying through a training class, Jeffco currently expects:
Veterans, active-duty service members, current peace officers, and competitive shooters may have other ways to show handgun competence. The Sheriff’s Office lists the accepted documents on its CHP page.
Jeffco handles CHP applications differently from many Front Range counties. Everything is submitted online, and the county won’t accept an incomplete application. Here’s how the process works.
Take your training before you start the application, since you’ll need to upload a copy of your original certificate when you apply. New applicants take our 8-hour CCW class.
Have these ready:
Applications and payments go through the county’s online permitting system. Don’t plan on walking a paper application into the office.
| Jefferson County CHP Service | Current Jefferson County Fee |
|---|---|
| New concealed handgun permit | $152.50 |
| Renewal of a valid permit | $63.00 |
| Late renewal (expired within 182 days) | $78.00 |
| Temporary/emergency permit | $55.50 |
| Lost, stolen, or damaged permit | $15.00 |
| Address or name change | No charge |
Add your training to estimate the total. Our new applicant class is $139, so most first-time Jeffco applicants spend about $291.50 before ammunition. Our CCW class cost guide has a fuller breakdown.
Our new applicant class follows Colorado’s current 8-hour training curriculum. It’s taught in a calm, beginner-friendly setting. You don’t need to be an experienced shooter to succeed.
Colorado Carry Law and Where Carry Ends: Learn where a permit does and doesn’t let you carry, including K–12 schools, public buildings with security screening, federal facilities, and private property where the owner prohibits firearms.
Safe Handling at Home and on the Road: Build habits around safe gun handling, storage, and transporting a handgun in your vehicle.
Use of Force and Staying Out of the Fight: Cover Colorado’s self-defense standards, avoiding and de-escalating conflict, and the legal weight of drawing a firearm.
Written Exam Covering What You Learned: The exam tests the safety and legal material you reviewed in class, so nothing on it should come as a surprise.
Supervised Live-Fire Qualification: Show safe, controlled handling during a 50-round live-fire exercise, with an instructor guiding every step.
Certificate Ready for Permitium: When you pass, you’ll get your signed training certificate, ready to upload with your Jefferson County application.
Carrying in Jefferson County means moving between very different settings in one day. You might commute on 6th Avenue, run errands in Wheat Ridge, and drive home past Red Rocks to the foothills. A few local points to keep in mind:
Your Jeffco permit application can’t move forward until your training is done, so start there. Our concealed carry classes give Lakewood, Arvada, Golden, and foothills residents the verified instruction, written exam, and live-fire qualification the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office expects, plus the signed certificate you’ll upload through Permitium.
Look through the upcoming dates below and pick the class that fits your schedule, whether you’re a first-time applicant or renewing.
Not right now. Jeffco residents usually train at our Denver South classroom on East Hampden Avenue. Renewal students may also choose our Denver Northwest classes at Shoot Indoors in Broomfield. Your certificate works for a Jefferson County application no matter which location you attend.
Jeffco requires a certificate from a verified Colorado instructor, and our instructors are verified. Our training is accepted in all 64 Colorado counties. If you’d like confirmation for your situation before you register, contact our team.
Plan on about $291.50: $139 for our new applicant class and $152.50 for the Jefferson County application. Ammunition and equipment rentals, if you need them, are extra.
The Sheriff’s Office allows up to 90 days to process an application. Build in time for your class and fingerprint appointment too. Our guide to Colorado CCW permit timelines walks through the whole process.
No. Jefferson County takes CHP applications and payments electronically through its Permitium portal. Fingerprint appointments are scheduled from inside that application.
If your permit expired fewer than 182 days ago, you can still renew for the $78 late fee with a current refresher certificate. Past that point, you’ll need the full 8-hour class and a new application.
Only if it’s recent enough. Jeffco requires a certificate within one year for new applications and within six months for renewals.
Possibly not. Jeffco accepts some alternatives, such as an honorable discharge within the past three years, or one that shows pistol qualification within the past ten years. Check the Sheriff’s list of accepted documents. If none fit, our class covers the requirement.
Whether you’re in a Lakewood apartment, a home in Arvada, or a cabin up near Conifer, the first step toward your Jefferson County CHP is the same: a qualifying class from a verified instructor. Reserve your seat, earn your certificate, and apply through the Sheriff’s Office with confidence.
