Colorado Semi Automatic Firearms Course for Hunter Safety Card Holders

Colorado’s new firearms law has left a lot of people unsure which course they actually need. If you already have your Hunter Safety Card, this semi automatic firearms course is the focused 4-hour training built for your next step, so you can meet the purchase requirement without taking courses that don’t apply to you.

Confused About the New Requirements?

When a firearms law changes, it’s easy to end up with half-answers, mixed advice, and more questions than you started with. If you already have your Hunter Safety Card and you’re trying to understand what Colorado’s new purchase requirement means for you, this is likely where you’re getting stuck:

How SB25-003 Affects First-Time Buyers

SB25-003 has created a lot of confusion, especially for people who already completed hunter safety and are trying to figure out what training they actually need. Here’s what changed, what didn’t, and how this requirement affects the purchase of certain qualifying semiautomatic firearms.

What’s Changing

Starting August 1, 2026, Colorado requires an in-person firearms safety course before the purchase or transfer of certain specified semiautomatic firearms. Under CPW’s current guidance, students who’ve already completed a CPW-certified hunter education course qualify for the shorter, 4-hour basic course instead of the 12-hour extended course.

What Isn’t Changing

This requirement is about future purchases or transfers, not current ownership. It also isn’t the same as concealed carry training. CPW states that CCW courses aren’t reciprocal for this program, which means this training serves a different purpose and follows its own process.

The Right Course for the Right Next Step

If you already have your Hunter Safety Card, the last thing you need is to sign up for the wrong class. At Colorado Handgun Safety, we make it easy to sign up for the correct, state-approved firearms course or handgun safety course

Our 4-Hour Basic Firearms Safety Course is a single in-person session for students who already have a Hunter Safety Card or a CPW-recognized hunter education record. It gives eligible students the certification they’ll need to purchase certain qualifying semiautomatic firearms.

What to Know

  • Course: 4-Hour Basic Firearms Safety Course
  • Format: Single in-person session
  • Who it’s for: Students with a Hunter Safety Card or CPW-recognized hunter education record
  • Why it matters: Required for certain qualifying firearm purchases or transfers after August 1, 2026
  • How long it lasts: Certification is valid for 5 years
  • What it doesn’t mean: This course is required to purchase certain firearms, not to own firearms you already have
  • After 5 years: You’ll need to retake the course before making a new qualifying purchase

Who This Course Is For

This course is a strong fit if you:

If you completed hunter education outside Colorado, CPW says that course must be CPW-certified, and your credentials must be verified in CPW’s records system before they count toward the shorter course path.

Three Easy Steps to Get Certified

Step 1: Confirm Your Hunter Safety Record

Start by confirming that your hunter safety record qualifies for the shorter course path. If you completed it out of state, it must be CPW-certified and verified before it can be used.

Step 2: Attend the 4-Hour Class

Next, attend the 4-hour class in person, complete the required instruction, and pass the final exam. CPW requires this course to be taught in person, and students must score at least 90%.

Step 3: Use Your Certification

After you finish the course, your completion is recorded for the purchase process. That certification stays valid for 5 years, and once it expires, you’ll need to retake the course before buying again.

Take the Right Next Course for You

At Colorado Handgun Safety, we make it easier to get the training you need without getting stuck in the confusion around SB25-003. If you’ve already completed hunter safety, sign up for our 4-hour course and take the next required step toward your qualifying purchase with clear instruction and the right certification.
